This past offseason disgruntled Buffalo Bills wide out Stefon Diggs was traded to the Houston Texans for a 2025 second-round draft pick. Despite all-pro talent, Diggs and his accompanying drama—showing up Josh Allen in a playoff loss to the Bengals, being sent home from mini-camp—became expendable when the Bills adopted an everybody-eats philosophy under new offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

Watching his old team dismante the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs with an impressive 30-21 victory, Diggs began to question himself and some of his past actions. Rehabbing from a season-ending knee injury in Houston, the firey receiver struck a humble note: “Maybe it was me who was the problem. Maybe instead of being him, I was just some loud-mouth asshole. And, maybe, it was 1-7’s team all along and I shouldn’t been runnin’ my mouth and showin’ him up.”

Diggs is referring to the self-regarding actions he made about himself as him—as in the best player in the league after catching a touchdown pass against the Rams in the 2022 season opener. “Maybe that kind of shit rips a team up. Damn, when I play in back in my head now, it keeps coming back to that same place—maybe it was me. Like Aaron Rodgers goes to the darkness, I’m gonna have to go to that place where it gets real for me.”

Often portrayed as volatile and impulsive, the dynamic wideout says that isn’t necessarily true, “I’m a competitor for sure, and everything else I say I am, I am, but I have a deep, reflective side too. When stuff is going down and there’s all this noise in my head I might draw a bath, light some scented candles, and dial-up some Sarah McLachlan. Sittin’ in the bath I turn things over, see how it can make me a better person and a better player. Now I’m in a space where I’m thinking all this business about being him hurt me and my team.”

While the playmaker admits delving into himself may lead to nothing, it’s still nice to sit in a warm tub with candles listening to his girl Sarah M. “Yeah, I might not get what I’m after,” he said, “but that line she sings about holding you down and kissing you so hard—it just, ya know, works for me.”

Diggs is set to be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season after voiding the remaining years on his contract.
